As Fire Prevention Month begins and Fire Prevention Week, kicks off this week, the Red Wing Fire Department is encouraging everyone to take steps to keep themselves and those around them safe.
According to NFPA, smoke alarms reduce the risk of dying in a home fire by more than half (54%). Meanwhile, roughly three out of five fire deaths happen in homes with either no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.
Fire Chief Mike Warner says “This year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign is a great way to remind everyone about these messages and to act on them.”
That includes installing smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area (like a hallway), and on each level (including the basement) of the home; making sure smoke alarms meet the needs of all family members, including those with sensory or physical disabilities; testing smoke alarms at least once a month by pushing the test button; and replacing all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old.
The smoke alarm safety theme will be present at Red Wing Fire Department’s annual open house on Sunday, October 13, from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at Fire Station 1, 420 Plum Street.
The open house includes demonstrations, station tours, the chance to view fire trucks and ambulances, and the opportunity to talk to firefighters.
