Plainview Elgin Area Food Shelf Goergen Honored

Greg Taylor

Darlene Goergen, a long-time director and Board of Directors member with the Plainview Elgin Area Food Shelf, was honored Jan. 2 along with the many Food Shelf volunteers during a recognition luncheon at the BlackTop Bar & Grill in Elgin.

According to the Plainview News, Goergen, who served as Food Shelf director for almost 20 years, has stepped down as a Board member. She also was honored with a cake on Jan. 2 - her 85th birthday.

The recognition was “definitely well-deserved,” current Food Shelf director and Board member Carmen Diedrich said. “She did a lot.”

Goergen is now free to play 500, Bridge, and Bingo.

The Food Shelf was originally in the current Ma’s Cafe, and occupied part of the Plainview Area Community and Youth Center in Plainview. Operations moved to Elgin around 2010.

Around 30 volunteers assist at the Food Shelf.

The Plainview Elgin Area Food Shelf is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesdays at 25 Main St. W. in Elgin.
