The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources approved a permit last week allowing a Pierce County factory farm to expand from 1,700 cows to 6,500 despite heavy local opposition.
Ridge Breeze Dairy had to re-submit its permit request after listing properties as locations for manure spreading without contacting the property owners, but the DNR approved the permit after reassessing the nutrient management plan.
Opponents of the expansion argue that the dairy still lacks agreements from every property owner listed in the permit, and the decision can be contested in court within a 60-day window.
