In Minnesota, lane splitting and filtering for motorcycles became legal on July 1, 2025.
This new law allows motorcycles to share lanes with other vehicles under specific conditions, primarily when traffic is moving slowly.
Red Wing Police Chief Nick Sather says lane splitting must be in traffic going the same way and it’s only permitted when traffic is moving at 25 miles per hour or less or through stopped traffic.
Sather says there are several key restrictions, including motorcycles can only travel up to 15 miles per hour faster than the surrounding traffic when lane splitting.
He says the the law aims to improve traffic flow by allowing motorcycles to navigate through slow or stopped traffic and improve safety by reducing the risk of rear-end collisions.
Lane splitting or filtering is not allowed in school zones, work zones, roundabouts, or on freeway on/off ramps.
