Fall high school sports practices start today in Minnesota, Fall sports include football, volleyball, girls tennis, girls swimming and diving. boys and girls soccer and boys and girls cross country.

Red Wing Aces make history!

The Red Wing Aces won three Region 5C playoff games Saturday to make the 2023 State Amateur Baseball Tournament. The Aces made history in becoming the first Aces team to win three games in one day day at the Athletic Field.

Here's how they pulled it off:

Game 1-Red Wing 6 Stewartville-Racine 1: The Aces pounded out 14 hits and broke the game open with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Dixon Irwin was 3-3 with three RBI to lead the offense. Zach Harding was 2-4 with two RBI.

Drew Ball went five innings plus and allowed just one hit and one unearned run. Ben Keuhni went the final four innings in relief to close out the win.

Game 2-Red Wing 3 Hastings 1: Aaron Johnson tossed a complete game five hitter for the Aces, allowing just one run in the first inning and blanking the Hawks the rest of the way. Johnson struck out 11 and didn't walk a batter. Johnson threw 112 pitches in the game including an astounding 91 for strikes.

Zach Harding tied the game with a monster home run to right field in the first inning. The Aces tacked on runs in the fourth and eighth inning to secure the victory.

Game 3-Cannon Falls 8 Austin 2: The Bears clinched the #1 seed out of Region 5C with a win over the Greyhounds. Cannon Falls scored four runs in the first inning and two in the third to put the game away early on.

Game 4-Red Wing 4 Austin 3: The Aces capped off their history making day by walking off the Greyhounds.

Austin's Jordan Hart's bases loaded double in the second inning gave the Hounds a 3-0 lead but Aces pitcher Ben Kuehni blanked the Austin attack after that.

Brodie Smith put the Aces on the board with a solo home run to left field in the third inning and Abe Reinitz' solo blast to left in the fifth inning cut the Austin lead to 3-2.

Wyatt Gonsior, subbing at second second base for the injured Adam Thygesen, singled to right field to score Marcus Walm to tie the game 3-3 in the sixth inning.

The dramatic bottom of the ninth inning saw Brodie Smith line an 0-1 pitch to left center field with two out to score courtesy runner Spencer Schroeder from third base and set off a wild celebration.

The Aces are 21-14 on the season and face the Avon Lakers (Region 8) in the the State Class C Tournament Sunday, August 20 at 1:30pm in Dassel, Minnesota on KCUE.

Cannon Falls as the #1 seed has a first weekend bye.

In Class B it's Miesville vs. St. Paul August 19 at 7pm in Waconia and Dundas vs. Highland Park at 4:30pm in Dassel.

Aces tourney notes:

*The Aces first game started at 9:56am Saturday and the final game ended at 8:48pm.

*Aces pitching allowed one earned run in 27 innings Saturday.

*Dixon Irwin caught all 27 innings for the Aces Saturday.
