Hockey:
Taylor Heise leads Team USA into the IIHF Women's World Hockey Championships starting today vs. Switzerland in Utica, New York at the Adirondack Bank Center.
Heise is one of five Minnesota PWHL players on the USA roster. Heise (Lake City, MN) played her high school hockey career in Red Wing and was Miss Minnesota Hockey in 2018. Heise went on to a stellar college career at the University of Minnesota and won the Patty Kazmaier award as the top player in women's college hockey two years ago. Heise was the number one overall pick in the inaugural PWHL draft last September.
Team USA plays four games in pool play before the medal round starts. The Gold Medal game is April 14th.
Basketball:
Hunter Lorenson of state Class AA runnerup Lake City is the Rochester Post Bulletin Boys Basketball player of the year.
Lorenson, a 5'11" senior, averaged 18.1 points per game his senior season in leading the Tigers to the state Class AA championship game where Lake City lost a 76-72 thriller to top ranked Breck. Lorenson, along with teammates Jaden Shones and Riley Fick, were named the the Class AA All Tournament Team.
Lorenson tallied 1626 career points, third all time on the Tigers all time scoring list and will play his college basketball at UM-Crookston.
Heise Transfers
Lake City native Nate Heise entered the NCAA basketball transfer portal a couple of weeks ago. It didn't take him long to find his new home.
Heise moves from Northern Iowa University to the Iowa State Cyclones. Iowa State made it to the Sweet 16 of this years NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament.
Heise will be a graduate transfer player and still has two years of eligibility. Heise averaged 32.9 minutes per game played with UNI this year and led the team in scoring at 13.5 points per contest.
Heise is Lake City's all time scoring leader with 2307 points and helped lead Lake City to state tournament appearances in 2017 and 2019.
