Basketball: Wingers Girls Basketball Coach Johnson resigns


Red Wing Wingers Girls Basketball Coach Peter Johnson has resigned after seven years at the helm.

In his resignation statement, Johnson stated "At this time I am resigning to spend more time with my young, energetic family." Peter and his wife, who both teach in the Red Wing School District, have four young children including two and half year-old twins.

Coach Johnson was a girls basketball assistant coach for three years under then head coach Jesse Nelson, was a boys golf coach for a couple seasons, a softball assistant coach and a boys basketball assistant coach under Doug Toivonen which went 29-3 and placed third at the 2016 state tournament.

Johnson led the Winger Girls to the state tournament in his first year as head coach in 2019-20. The Wingers were 26-4 that season. The Wingers were 8-19 in 2023-24 but were 20-8 in 2024-25 and this year sparkled with a 25-5 record before falling 60-56 to Rochester Lourdes March 5th in the Section 1AA championship game at Mayo Auditorium.

Coach Johnson's overall record with the Wingers was 120-64...a .652 winning percentage.


Halverson Nabs State Award!


Goodhue Wildcats Boys Basketball Coach Matt Halverson has selected by the Minnesota Basketball Coaches Association (MBCA) as the Boys State Class AA Coach Of The Year.

Halverson led Goodhue to the HVL championship, an all time school best 31-2 record and a second place finish in the boys state basketball tournament this past weekend.
