City Council Riverfront Trail Vote

The Red Wing City Council Monday night voted to override Mayor Mike Wilson’s veto on the matter of the purchase and sale agreement with Canadian Pacific Railway for the right of way needed for the proposed Riverfront Trail Segment 3.

The Riverfront Trail is envisioned from the Cannon Valley Trail to Colvill Park and Segment 3, Barn Bluff Park to Colvill Park, is an important segment connecting two highly popular regional parks.

The Council had approved the motion in it’s consent agenda earlier this month but Mayor Wilson balked at the cost of 4-million dollars and didn’t sign it.

The council disagreed with that asessement and brought it back to a vote. Council member Evan Brown says it’s a long time vision fulfilled.

The vote was 5-2, with Kim Beise and Don Kliewer.

The $90,000 to cover the cost of the property acquisition was already set aside.

City staff has been working with CP Rail for over 5 years to acquire the necessary right-of-way for this segment of the Riverfront Trail.
