Red Wing School Board members continued to struggle at last week's meeting with the idea of extending students' walking distances to school.
The board and administration have talked for several weeks about saving $160,000 in busing costs by adding a half mile to walk zones -- 1.5 miles for elementary students and 2 miles for grades 5-12.
While the District is looking at nearly $2.3 million in cuts, several board members said they would consider dipping into the fund balance to continue current transportation levels.
Discussion on this and other financial considerations will continue at the Monday, June 3 meeting. The board is expected to finalize the budget on June 17.
In related business, the board approved a two-year contract extension with First Student, the District's transportation provider. The board also approved contracts with the teachers and custodial unions. Those will expire June 30, 2025.
