After multiple surveys and conversations with the community, the Red Wing City Council last week approved the Red Wing Comprehensive Road Safety Action Plan with the goal of decreasing fatalities and series injuries over time.
Between the years of 2014 and 2023, there were 248 crashes that involved someone being killed or injured, with 48 of those crashes involving someone being killed or seriously injured, on Red Wing’s streets.
Red Wing crash data indicates that fatal and serious injury crashes are most likely to occur in historically disadvantaged communities where residents tend to rely more on walking, bicycling, and using mobility devices for transportation.
This plan helps to identify inequities and outlines ways to address issues.
Through an equity mapping analysis, along Highway 61, around downtown, and in the east section of town have the highest potential for disadvantage.
The plan doesn't officially commit the City to any specific projects yet, but it provides a roadmap for high-priority projects and programs for the future, along with high-level engineering drawings to help guide improvements.
Having an approved plan also gives the City the ability to apply for future federal transportation funds.
The plan was created entirely through grants with no dollars from the City’s General Fund.
