Red Wing City Council Cuts Homeless Shelter Funding

The Red Wing City Council last week voted 5-1 to amend the request by Red Wing’s homeless shelter for funding their seasonal overnight shelter.

Hope and Harbor Executive Director, Liz Magill, requested $20,000 in 2025 to help with the shelter's organizational costs.

That request was rejected and after discussion, $5,000 was settled on by the majority.

City staff has been investigating how other cities in Minnesota fund similar organizations. Council member Don Kliewer said the findings showed very few communities actually fund shelters.

Vicki Jo Lambert supported the original request and also was in favor of matching last year’s donation of $10,000.

Lambert cast the lone no vote, saying it was hard to support such a low number. Council member Evan Brown was absent.

The shelter finished it’s 5th year of being open during the months of November through March, rotating locations at local churches.

Magill says the statistics show the shelter served 47 unduplicated guests this season. They were open 116 nights and offered 813 duplicated nights of care.

Magill says they saw an increase of 16% on duplicated nights of care over last year.
