152nd Annual Viola Gopher Count

The nation’s oldest continuous town festival is nearly here.

The Plainview News reports the first Viola Gopher Count was  held June 27, 1874 and this year, it’s scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday.

The 152^nd annual Gopher Count kicks off tomorrow at 5 pm with food and drinks and at 6 pm it’s Disco Party Bingo, with prizes for kids and adults, after bingo, live music by Brandon Stephenson and fireworks at dusk.

Thursday the 18^th, highlights include the crowning of Gopher Count royalty at 9:30 am, the Grand Parade at 10 am, a kids’ pedal pull and Kiddie Parade at 11:30 am, bean bag tournament and park games and races at 2 pm.

From 4 pm – midnight, there’s live music by the Rocking’ Hep Cats and Rafe Carlson.
