Large crowds gathered August 6 in Plainview and Elgin for the annual ‘National Night Out’ celebration, a community-building campaign which promotes police and community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie.
According to the Plainview News, visitors at Plainview’s fire hall checked out the shiny fire trucks, visited with firefighters and police officers, and enjoyed hot dogs, chips, ice cream bars and cotton candy. Kids received color stickers and shot water into a plywood ‘house’ with the help of fire fighters.
Those in Elgin enjoyed DJ music by Good Times DJ Entertainment, food, ice cream and a ‘bounce house,’ and checked out the city’s shiny fire trucks. Kids ran under a giant sheet of water provided by firefighters, and visited with Wabasha County Sheriff’s Deputy Erik Rollie and his retiring K-9 partner, Melee.
Amber Ruth, a member of Elgin’s Economic Development Authority and the ‘Experience Elgin’ organization, estimated that at least 250 to 300 people were on hand for National Night Out. Ruth says it gets bigger and bigger every year, this is the biggest turnout yet.
National Night Out was introduced in 1984 and the first event involved 2.5 million neighbors across 400 communities in 23 states.
