A hands-on training CPR/AED training session for bystanders is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 3 at Plainview American Legion Post 179.
The event is free and open to the public.
According to the Plainview News, this effort is done in memory of Chad Schmit, a former community member who passed away suddenly in 2021 due to cardiac complications.
The course will cover the following: Determining the difference between a heart attack and cardiac arrest, identifying cardiac arrest, how to administer chest compressions and why rescue breaths are no longer advised.
Instructions on how to operate an AED (Automated External De‑ brillator). Brief discussion on heart disease/stroke signs/symptoms, and legalities.
The class will last about 60-90 minutes and is available to an unlimited number of attendees. No preregistration is required.
A certificate card will be issued upon course completion.
As part of the event, the organizers of the annual Chad Schmit Memorial Beef Classic will be donating an AED device and cabinet to the Plainview American Legion to have on hand for events they have year ‘round there.
