After a 3-3 vote Monday night, following the mandated Truth in Taxation public hearing, the Red Wing City Council will have to try and pass the 2024 City budget and tax levy at it’s next meeting, Monday, December 11th.
The seventh member of the Council, Vicki Jo Lambert, was unable to attend the meeting, so the measure needed 4 yes votes to pass.
In September, the council approved a 16.5% preliminary property tax levy but the council has been working to cut that number down, to 10.89%.
Council member Becky Norton supported the levy increase saying the council worked together to balance cuts with needed services.
Norton, Kim Beise, and Evan Brown voted in favor of the levy and budget, which is just over 26-million, 115-thousand dollars.
Janie Farrar, who along with Ron Goggin and Don Kliewer cast no votes, said she ran for the seat on lowering taxes and can’t support a double digit increase.
Mayor Mike Wilson has previously said he would like to see number cut to 5%, but that wouldn’t mean cuts to emergency personnel and vital staff. The Mayor can veto the levy and budget IF it passes next Monday night buit the Council can override his veto with 5 votes.
