Red Wing Aces 9 Wanamingo Jacks 2-The Aces pulled away late in the game to capture the #1 seed in Region 5C and earn their sixth trip to the state tournament in the last seven years. The game was played at Dartts Park in Owatonna.
Red Wing led 3-2 in the bottom of the sixth inning when Reese Tripp clubbed a solo home run to put the Aces up 4-2. Marcus Walm's solo shot, a rocket to left, put the Aces up 5-2. Red Wing added three more runs in the bottom of the seventh on Reese Tripp's RBI single, an RBI double by Tyler Rodgers and an RBI single by Josh Thygesen. Adam Thygesen closed out the Aces scoring with an RBI single in the eighth inning.
Josh Thygesen led the Aces with three RBI and added two hits. Reese Tripp and Marcus Walm had three hits apiece. Tyler Rodgers and Adam Thygesen had two hits apiece. Dixon Irwin and Reid Hartmann both doubled and scored in the game as part of a 16 hit attack.
Aaron Johnson was electric on the mound again for Red Wing. "The Big Unit" allowed two runs, just one earned, scattering six hits (no hits after the fifth inning) with one walk and eight strike outs. Johnson is 10-0 on the season with a 0.97 ERA and he has 109 strike outs in 74 1/3 innings pitched.
Aces starting shortstop Zach Harding suffered a dislocated left shoulder diving for a ground ball in the top of the fifth inning and is likely out for the rest of the state tournament.
The Region 5C tournament wrapped up with two more games Saturday. Hastings knocked out Austin 9-4 but then Wanamingo knocked out Hastings 9-6 in the final game to earn the #2 seed.
The Aces then drafted pitchers Tyler Schmitz of Stewartville, Keith Meyers of Cannon Falls and Jordan Jeske of Hastings for the state tournament.
The Aces (20-11) will have a bye next weekend as a Region champion. Morris plays Waterville Saturday, August 17 at 4pm in Green Isle. The Aces play the winner of that game the following weekend. The date and time for that game has yet to be determined.
Red Wing hosts the Rochester Royals in an exhibition game Tuesday at 7:30pm at The Athletic Field. The Royals are headed to the state tournament out of Section 1B as are the Miesville Mudhens.
Miesville faces the Minneapolis Mudcats Friday at 7:30pm in Shakopee in their first round game.

Fall high school sports practices start today in Minnesota. Sports include football, girls tennis, girls swimming and diving, boys and girls soccer, boys and girls cross country and girls volleyball in Red Wing.
