Camp Companion is an area humane organization whose mission is to prevent future generations of homeless animals.Â
The Rochester-based non-traditional humane organization’s program centers around Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR). Through TNR, outdoor feral cats are humanely trapped, brought to a veterinary clinic to be spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and ear-tipped then returned to the outdoor homes to which they are bonded so they can live out their lives where they thrive.
The Plainview News reports they approached the Elgin City Council last summer after learning about the growing outdoor cat population and they approved a partnership with Camp Companion to conduct a large-scale TNR clinic in partnership with Plainview Animal Clinic and Plainview Veterinary Clinic.
More than 60 cats were trapped between Oct. 17 and Oct. 21.
Forty cats were altered and approximately 25 kittens and a couple of friendly adults have entered Camp Companion’s adoption program, many of whom have already been adopted into indoor homes. The remaining kittens are in area foster homes and will be altered when they are older.
Camp Companion is monitoring a few remaining cats and is planning a phase two operation soon, weather permitting.
Otherwise, they will resume in early spring.
If any other area communities are interested in partnering with them, please email questions@campcompanion.org.
