This is Winter Weather Awareness Week and Wabasha County Emergency Management would like to remind you of some important tips.
Brenda Tomlinson is Wabasha County’s Emergency Management Director and she says among the startling statistics, five people drowned last year when they fell through the ice, approximately 65 percent of all ice drownings are vehicle-related and several children die almost every year in ice-related accidents.
Tomlinson reminds folks of safety first tips, including never walk on ice less than four inches thick and don't snowmobile on less than five inches or drive your car on less than eight inches of new, clear ice.
The Plainview News reports fourteen people died in snowmobile accidents in Minnesota from December 2022 through April 2023.
Four of those snowmobile deaths were alcohol or drug-related.
