The Red Wing Public Schools Cell Phone Usage

The Red Wing Public Schools District Advisory Council on Thursday, April 11, focused on concerns about students' cell phone usage and some potential solutions.

The DAC has 40-some members including students, parents, citizens and staff.

This was the second step in the District's exploration of implementing a policy specific to student use of smartphones and related electronic devices.

School Board members began the process at their April 1 workshop. They will gather community input in May and June.

Also on Thursday, the Minnesota House of Representatives passed an education policy bill that would require public schools to adopt by March 15, 2025, a policy on students' possession and use phones in school.

The bill, which now goes back to the Minnesota Senate, states that smartphones have contributed to "conflicts, a toxic culture, distractions and deterring human interaction," the Session Daily reported.

Red Wing School Board members said they hope to have a policy in place by the start of the 2024-2025 academic year.
