Marc-Andre Fleury had a strong showing against his former team as the Wild beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2 at the Xcel Energy Center on Friday. Fleury made 34 saves in the game, including 14 in the final period. Kirill Kaprizov scored in the middle of the third to put Minnesota up for good. Jonas Brodin and Matt Boldy also lit the lamp in the victory. The Wild are in sixth place in the Central Division with 51 points and a 23-23-and-5 record. They visit the Golden Knights tonight.
The Timberwolves will try to get a winning streak going when they visit the Los Angeles Clippers at Crypto-dot-com Arena tonight. The Wolves are coming off a 129-105 rout over the Milwaukee Bucks on Thursday. Minnesota is in first place in the Western Conference at 36-and-16. Tonight's game tips off at 9:30PM.
The Twins stayed active on the trade market over the weekend. The team acquired reliever Steven Okert from the Marlins in a deal that sent utility man Nick Gordon to Miami. Gordon missed most of last season due to injury. Okert was 3-and-2 with a 4.45 ERA in 64 appearances for Miami.
The Minnesota Gophers fell apart in the second half of their 90-85 loss to the Iowa Hawkeyes at Hawkeye-Carver Arena. The Gophers had a 51-38 lead at halftime before getting outscored 52-34 the rest of the way. Dawson Garcia and Braeden Carrington both finished with 18 points in the losing effort. Minnesota is now tied for sixth place in the Big Ten with a 6-and-6 conference record and a 15-and-8 mark overall. The Gophers visit number-two Purdue on Thursday.
Spring training is right around the corner. Brewers pitchers and catchers report for camp this week with their first scheduled workout set for Thursday in Phoenix. The first full-squad workout will be next Tuesday. The Brewers will then begin spring play February 24th against the Padres in Peoria.
The ninth-ranked Badgers are back home to clash with Ohio State tomorrow night in Madison. Wisconsin has lost four in-a-row following Saturday's 78-56 setback at Rutgers. The Badgers sit at 16-and-8 including 8-and-5 in Big Ten play. UW is sure to drop in the rankings when the new Top-25 Coaches' Poll is released today.
Patrick Mahomes is the Super Bowl MVP for the third time in his career. The three-time Super Bowl champ came up big through the air and on the ground in the Kansas City's 25-22 overtime win over the San Francisco 49ers. Mahomes completed 34-of-46 passes for 333 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in the victory. He also led the Chiefs in the run game with nine carries for 66 yards. Mahomes joins Tom Brady and Joe Montana as the only players to win the Super Bowl MVP award at least three times.
