Red Wing City Council Cannabis Options

Greg Taylor

During the 2023 legislative session, the State of Minnesota made it legal for people over the age of 21 to grow, use, buy, and sell cannabis as a retail business.

Tribal governments were able to start selling last summer. Starting January 1, 2025, non-tribal entities can start selling to the public after they have a license.

Cities cannot ban cannabis dispensaries, so many towns across the state, including Red Wing, are considering how to proceed.

State law requires that cities allow at least one dispensary for every 12,500 residents, so based on Red Wing's population, the Red Wing City Council could adopt a local law that limits the number of dispensaries in our community to two.

The Red Wing City Council is considering additional options also, including a potential collaboration with the Prairie Island Indian Community, which currently owns and operates Island Peži, the cannabis dispensary on Prairie Island.
