Plainview Public Library Civil War Presentation

Greg Taylor

The Plainview Public Library recently hosted a presentation regarding Minnesota’s presence in the Civil War.

According to the Plainview News, attendees received quite a history lesson from Arn Kind, a retired teacher and member of the First Minnesota Volunteer Infantry Regiment, a reenactment group based at Fort Snelling.

Kind displayed Civil War-era uniforms and artifacts, including Union and Confederate flags, and presented interesting facts - and hard truths - in his animated fashion. He set the stage for the war, fought from 1861 to 1865.

Minnesota was the first state in the Union to volunteer troops; of about 22,000 soldiers, more than 2,500 did not return alive.

Kind’s interactive presentation also included discussion on notable battles, how Civil War cannons were fired, and the emergence of Union and Confederate flags, among other topics.

He invited the audience to handle the artifacts on hand. People were allowed to pick up the weapons, try on the hats, and ask questions about what they were seeing.

The Plainview event was made possible by the people of Minnesota, through the state’s Arts and Cultural Heritage Library Legacy Fund, in cooperation with Southeastern Libraries Cooperating (SELCO).
