The Minnesota Department of Agriculture recently awarded $3.53 million in Local Food Purchase Assistance (LFPA) grants to 33 organizations, local units of government, and tribal nations throughout the state, including the Red Wing Farmers Market.
Â
Market Manager, Sara George, says they successfully completed the first distribution of the LFPA initiative on June 5th, bringing in 28 boxes filled with fresh, local, nutrient dense foods to residents of Jordan Towers Apartments.
Â
George says they will deliver 60 boxes of food per week to Jordan Towers for 40 weeks at no charge. Â Â
Â
The Red Wing Farmers’ Market Association received $96,000 in grant funding to provide locally grown nutritious food, mostly fruits and vegetables, and distribute it to underserved people in Red Wing.Â
Â
A total of over $1,500 was disbursed to area farmers who supplied the products, contributing to the sustainability and growth of our local agricultural community.
Â
The local food included in the first delivery included products from Driftless Orchard, Timm Family Farm, M&R Valley, and Lee’s Family Farm.
