Local first responders were honored December 29 during a ceremony at the BlackTop Bar & Grill in Elgin.
Standing amongst them and receiving numerous hugs was Ricky, now 7. He was discharged from the hospital in September.
Craig Ziebell said time seemed to stand still on June 25, 2024.
According to the Plainview News, a 6-year-old boy named Ricky had been accidentally shot in Elgin, and he needed help.
First responders Craig Beck, Jaynah Heim, Tom Keller, Tyler Meyers, Sarah Ring and Zach Ziebell - son of Craig Ziebell, Elgin’s Emergency Management director and a City Council member - raced to the scene and worked to save the boy.
Staff with Elgin Ambulance Service, the Wabasha County Sheriff’s Office, and Mayo Clinic’s air ambulance also responded.
Each of six plaques presented to the honorees read:
“You are hereby awarded the Life Saving award for your actions that assisted in saving the life of a civilian on 6/26/2024. Without your efforts, the patient would likely have not survived. Your dedication and commitment are greatly appreciated.” - Mayor Tim Boardman.
A loaded shotgun left unsecured in a vehicle led to Ricky’s accidental shooting, according to information from the Sheriff’s Office.
Two other children in the vehicle were uninjured.
