February is American Heart Month and heart disease is the number one cause of death for men and women in the U.S.
Carla Theusch, Manager of Rehabilitation Services, including Cardiac Rehab at Gundersen St. Elizabeth’s in Wabasha, says the term “heart disease” refers to several types of heart conditions.
Examples include, Arrhythmias-problems with your heart rhythm, congenital heart defects, heart valve disease, and coronary artery disease.
Theusch says after a patient experiences a heart attack, they’ll be referred to Cardiac Rehab. A typical program consists of three sessions a week for 12 weeks.
Theusch says It is very important to keep your blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugars, and weight in-check; as well as tobacco cessation.
Seeing your provider on a regular basis to help manage these is vital to your heart health.
