Accident Gas Meter

The Red Wing Fire Department was dispatched to Highway 61 and Fern Ave for a 2-vehicle accident with 1 of the vehicles then hitting a house and striking the gas meter Wednesday at 1:03 pm.

Xcel Energy was requested to the scene while responding.

Firefighter/paramedics were on the scene within three minutes of receiving the call and identified an accident scene spread across both directions of Highway 61.

74-year old Maurice Zaffke of Red Wing was travelling northbound on Hwy 61, when it collided with a vehicle which was also southbound on Hwy 61 driven by 70-year old Roberta Kirchner. Her husband, 77-year old Richard Kirchner, both from Bloomington, was also in the car.

All three were transported from the scene to MAYO Clinic Hospital in Red Wing with non-life threatening injuries.

A portion of the home sustained significant damage and was turned over to the homeowner following the incident.

Highway 61 was shut down for about an hour while emergency crews stabilized and cleared the incident.
