At their last meeting, the Wabasha County Commissioners approved a 2025 Noxious Weed Grant Application Project proposal.
The County will apply for a $3,000 Minnesota Department of Agriculture Fiscal Year 2025 Noxious Weed and Invasive Plant grant for biological control of Purple Loosestrife within Wabasha County.
According to the Plainview News, the project seeks to address areas of Purple Loosestrife within Wabasha County through the use of biological control.
Controlling the spread of Purple Loosestrife is imperative to protecting native fish, wildlife, and plant habitat in wetlands and along banks of the rivers and streams within Wabasha County.
Six target areas will focus on a combination of sites that have been established for several years and have been unsuccessfully eradicated, as well as newly identified locations in the county within the past two years.Â
The release of Purple Loosestrife beetles for biological control of Purple Loosestrife will aid in the efforts to eradicate current plant sites and act as a rapid response and preventative measure towards any new infestations that may try and take hold.
The Wabasha County Board of Commissioners generally meet at 9 a.m. on the first and third Tuesday of each month in the Old Courthouse Annex at 625 Jefferson Ave. in Wabasha.
