Wabasha County Sheriff Curt Struwe and Emergency Management Director Brenda Tomlinson presented updates on the statewide Indoor Digital School Mapping Project to County Commissioners during their meeting on Oct. 20.

The collaborative, multi-region initiative is designed to create highly detailed digital Geographic Information System (GIS) maps of all local school buildings and grounds, providing emergency personnel and first responders with exact floor plans and structural layouts to improve response times and tactical coordination during a school crisis.

According to the Plainview News, seven southeast Minnesota facilities have opted out, including five in Olmsted County, one in Houston County, and one in Rice County.

Facilities in Winona and Goodhue counties must still be worked on.

Some schools have not been finalized, and their information has not been published to the portal.

The current contract is through February, 2027 to cover updates.
