A recent seasonal fish die-off in SE Minnesota is being catagorized as a natural phenomenon that’s common this time of the year.
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources reports it responded to two seasonal fish die-offs on the river this month, one in Lake City on February 3 and another in Wabasha on February 8.
The DNR says this is caused by ‘thermal stress’ due to the recent high temperatures. About one thousand gizzard shad were killed.
The DNR says as many as 500 fish die-offs can happen each year in Minnesota, most of them from natural causes.
