Red Wing Public Schools start Tuesday, September 2nd, and now is a great time to get a refresher on how to lawfully stop or pass a school bus.
Red Wing Poilce Chief, Nick Sather says in Minnesota, drivers must stop at least 20 feet away from a school bus when its red lights are flashing and the stop-arm is extended.
Sather says it’s not allowed to pass a school bus on the right, unless it’s in moving traffic, and violations can result in a $500 fine.
Depending on the circumstances, possibly worse.
More severe penalties, including criminal charges, can be applied for passing on the right, passing when a child is present, or causing injury or death.
