Matter Prison Sentence

Updated: May 2

A Red Wing woman appeared in court Friday to be sentenced after pleading guilty to Second Degree Murder – With Intent – Not Premeditated, in the death of a baby boy found at the Methodist Campus Beach in Frontenac in 2003.

Jennifer Matter was sentenced to 27 years in prison and immediately taken into custody.

She will remain in the Goodhue County ADC until being transferred to MN Department of Corrections.

Matter was identified and arrested last year as the mother of two of the three newborn children who were found dead in the Mississippi River in southeastern Minnesota between 1999 and 2007.

Matter admitted to giving birth on Methodist Beach in 2003 and leaving the baby there.

Prosecutors say DNA evidence also links Matter to a baby girl found by the Mississippi four years earlier, but charges have not been filed in that case.
