The plan to add a second daily Amtrak train between St. Paul's Union Depot and Chicago is getting closer to reality.
Laurel Stinson is the City of Red Wing’s representative on the Great River Rail Commission. She says the second train would have a very positive economic impact for cities along the route, including Red Wing.
Stinson says once the second train is up and running next year, there are plans to expand as more people use it.
Minnesota is expected to approve the additional $300,000 needed early next year as the final funding piece.
In addition to stops in in Red Wing, the second daily train will stop in Winona, Wabasha, Lake City, Hastings, and La Crosse, among others.
Stinson says the City Council will appoint another person to be Red Wings representative on the Commission after the first of the year.
