Wabasha Fire Department Air Boat

Greg Taylor

The Wabasha Fire Department, in partnership with Wabasha County Sheriff Department, has officially put the new air boat into service, thanks to a federal grant they were awarded.

This will help them perform water rescues and ice rescues.

The grant had been worked on for over 3 years with Wabasha Fire Chief Darren Sheeley being the primary person looking to acquire this equipment.

Chief Sheeley commented in February when it was announced the grant came through “We hope we never have to use it in a rescue but will surely be glad we have it if we do. It will also help keep our volunteer staff safer and will be an asset for the whole county.”

The Fire Department did use some of their gambling funds to help match the Federal dollars.

In total, the boat and equipment cost around $130,000.
