Wabasha County Sheriff's Latest Scams

The Wabasha County Sheriff's Office is reminding residents that fraud/scam calls never end and you should always be alert.

Recent scams reported include phone calls that appear to come from Medicare, Social Security, and even yourself.

Keep in mind if you get any call asking for your personal information... ANY CALL... it is a good chance it could be fraudulent.

For example, you could receive a phone call from “Medicare” advising that your card is no longer valid and they want to verify your information to send out a new card.

These calls can sound very convincing but generally places like Medicare, Social Security, your bank etc will all use mail to contact you if there is an issue unless you have signed up for paperless contacts.

In that case, they will use your email address and they will already know your information. The only time you may need to give out information is if you call them. They will then ask numerous questions to make sure you are you.

As a general rule if someone calls you asking for your information, do not answer anything but simply hang up and block their number.

If you feel you may have a real issue with any organization, call them at a verified phone number that you look up or visit them in person.

Scams are becoming increasingly sophisticated, so it’s essential to stay alert, avoid clicking suspicious links, and never share personal information with unverified sources. Tools like Guardio can also help protect against malicious websites and online threats.
