Sturgeon Lake Road Project Groundbreaking

The City of Red Wing is excited to announce the start of construction on the Sturgeon Lake Road project, a major infrastructure improvement initiative.

The Minnesota State Legislature has fully funded the construction and right-of-way acquisition.

A groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for Monday, May 13, at 3 p.m.

The event will take place on Prairie Island at NSP Road (off Sturgeon Lake Road) at a junction near the railroad crossing. Speakers will include representatives from the State of Minnesota, Prairie Island Indian Community Tribal Council, Red Wing City Council, and others.

This project will eliminate one of Minnesota's most dangerous at-grade railroad crossings by constructing a new overpass over a Canadian Pacific Kansas City railway main line that periodically blocks the only avenue in and out of the Prairie Island Indian Community.

The Prairie Island Nuclear Generating Plant and Lock and Dam No. 3 on the Mississippi River are also located in this area.

Additionally, this project will construct a new roadway underpass to improve access to Bdewakantunwan Dakota tribal lands, including the Treasure Island Resort & Casino.

The underpass will also accommodate increased traffic from the Island Event Center, and new stormwater infrastructure will improve floodplain water storage.
