The Wild faded in the third period of their 7-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning at Amalie Arena. The Wild were within one entering the final frame before surrendering three goals during the third. Joel Eriksson Ek, Marco Rossi, and Jake Middleton each had a goal in the losing effort. The Wild have dropped five of six and remain in seventh place in the Central Division with 41 points and an 18-21-and-5 record. Minnesota visits Florida tonight.
The Wild have suffered a major injury blow. The team announced yesterday that Jared Spurgeon will miss the rest of the season with a hip injury. He's expected to undergo a procedure on his left hip next month, followed up by back surgery. The team captain has been in and out of the lineup this season due to various injuries, having played in just 16 games. However, the 34-year-old finished in the top 15 of Norris voting the past two seasons, which is an award given out to the league's best defenseman. The team moved Spurgeon's 7.5-million-dollar contract to long term injured reserve, and will have additional cap space to potentially make a trade to help shore up the blue line.
The Minnesota Gophers gave up a big run during the final five minutes of their 76-66 loss to Michigan State at Breslin Events Center. The game was tied at 62 with five-and-a-half minutes left in regulation before Michigan State ended the game with a 14-4 run. Dawson Garcia scored 22 points in the losing effort. The Gophers dropped to 12-and-6 overall and 3-and-4 in the Big Ten. Minnesota hosts number-eight Wisconsin on Tuesday.
The next stage in the NFL postseason is here. Four pairs of teams will duke it out this weekend for a chance to play in the Conference championship round. The Divisional games kick off on Saturday afternoon when the top-seed in the AFC Baltimore Ravens host rookie sensation CJ Stroud and the Houston Texans. The nightcap features a showdown in Santa Clara where the Number-1 seed in the NFC San Francisco 49ers will try to slow down Jordan Love and the Green Bay Packers. Another pair of teams clash on Sunday afternoon when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and rejuvenated Baker Mayfield visit Jared Goff's tough Detroit Lions. A marquee matchup takes place later in the day when Patrick Mahomes and the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs face off against dynamic gunslinger Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills at Orchard Park.
