PEM High School senior Devin Peterson earned the rank of Eagle Scout during a ceremony this past Saturday, April 20 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church near Plainview.

According to the Plainview News, his Eagle Scout project involved cleanup and restoration at Beaver Cemetery, about eight miles east of Plainview, in 2023. Devin organized several volunteers to assist in leveling and cleaning gravestones, and making inscriptions more legible.

Flat stones nearly sunken into the ground were raised up.

Devin did research to see which products and techniques could be used to clean the stones without damaging them further. They washed stones using pressure canisters, Dawn dishwashing liquid, and soft-bristled brushes.

It was a lot of work: the Beaver Cemetery contains more than 200 stones, dating to 1854.
