Millville Man Pleads Guilty

A southeastern Minnesota man is pleading guilty to killing his father last year and faces 36 years in prison.

Prosecutors say 46-year James Riley of Millville pleaded guilty Friday to the March 2021 second-degree murder of 73-year-old Edward Riley.

Riley's body was found by his wife in the truck of his vehicle at a rural Zumbro Falls farm.

Investigators say James Riley confessed to hitting his father in the head with a hammer a couple of times and then stabbing him. Court documents state Riley then admitted to putting his father's body in the trunk of the vehicle.

The criminal complaint says James Riley was upset that his father didn’t name him as an heir to the family farm. He will serve 36 years under a plea agreement.
