District 2B:
Red Wing Aces 7 Austin Greyhounds 3-The Aces grabbed an early lead and went on to beat the Greyhounds at the Red Wing Athletic Field to win the District 2B title.
Dixon Irwin had an RBI single in the first inning to give the Aces an early lead, scoring Reid Hartmann. Hartmann had an RBI double in the second inning to score Tyler Rodgers to put the Aces up 2-0. Red Wing added three more runs in the fifth inning to chase Greyhounds starting pitcher Joe Huffman. Tyler Rodgers belted a solo home run to left field and Dixon Irwin added a two run double.
Aces starting pitcher Drew Ball cruised through five innings but gave up a three run homer to Jordan Hart in the bottom of the sixth inning. Ball ended up going 5 2/3 innings, striking out 11 and walking two batters. 17 year-old Brodie Gibart went the final 3 2/2 innings to pick up the save.
The Aces had 12 hits in the game with Reid Hartmann going 4-4 with a walk, three runs scored and an RBI. Dixon Irwin had two hits and four RBI. Marcus Walm had an RBI double and scored a run and Tyler Rodgers had the solo home run and scored twice.
The Aces have made it to state four straight years and seven of the last eight seasons.
Other District 2B games Saturday:
Northfield 6 Rochester 2 (Rochester eliminated)
Northfield 8 Austin 6 (Austin eliminated, Northfield to state as the #2 seed)
Region 5C Saturday:
Cannon Falls beat Veseli 6-5 and then knocked off Waseca 7-5 in Waterville to get the #3 seed and punch up a trip to state. Pine Island is the #2 seed and makes it to state. Waterville earned the # seed out of Region 5C.
The Red Wing Aces have a first round bye and will face the Union Hill vs. Cold Spring winner Saturday, August 23rd at 11am in Hutchinson in the Class C Sweet 16 round.
Cannon Falls plays Roseau in a first round Class Class C game Saturday in Gaylord at 6:30pm. Pine Island will play Courtland Sunday in Hutchinson at 1:30pm.
Defending State Class A champion Miesville has a first round bye and will host the Minnetonka vs. Waconia winner August 22nd at 7:30pm in Gaylord.
