DNR Draft Wastewater Permit Comments

Area residents are invited to comment on the draft wastewater permit for the Minnesota Department of Natural Resource’s Crystal Springs State Fish Hatchery near Altura.

The fish hatchery produces trout for stocking Minnesota’s lakes and rivers.

Water from two natural springs flows through the hatchery’s rearing units before the hatchery discharges it to an unnamed creek. Up to 3.2 million gallons of water per day flows through the hatchery.

According to the Plainview News, the draft water quality permit requires new monitoring for temperature and sulfate.

Wastewater from industrial and commercial sources may contain pollutants at levels that could adversely affect the water quality in area wetlands, streams, rivers, and lakes.

Water quality permits - or National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permits - establish specific limits and requirements to protect Minnesota's surface and groundwater quality.

The deadling to comment is Monday, January 13th at 11:59 pm.
