
The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) has announced $5.21 million in grants to help drive economic development and community sustainability in six eligible Minnesota communities with power plants that are scheduled to close or have recently closed.
The City of Red Wing will receive $1,000,000 in grant funds that will support multi-year planning to create numerous transition planning documents.
Those will include an economic impact assessment, community engagement and support strategy, revenue diversification strategy, infrastructure enhancements, workforce development and retraining, and more.
Red Wing City Council President Kim Beise says the DEED grant will help develop economic diversification strategies so the city can continue to thrive after the power plant is retired.
Prairie Island Nuclear Generating Plant’s Units 1 and 2 are licensed by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to operate through 2033 and 2034, respectively.
Xcel Energy has filed for another 20 year extension.
