The Red Wing City Council last week unanimously approved $50,000 from the Downtown Investment Fund to go the winner of the the first-ever Red Wing Redevelopment Challenge.
The program designed to spur economic and housing growth in Red Wing's historic downtown area.
Kyle Klatt, Community Development Director, says Bush Street Investments plans to revitalize the Hallstrom's building at 317 Bush Street. Their project includes adding five residential units to the second story, improving the exterior façade, and preserving the building's historic integrity.
Additional contributions from other community partners will determine the challenge's total financial contribution to the project.
Council chair Becky Norton says it’s a great project that’s a good fit for downtown. Bush Street Investments was asking for up to $100,000, but Norton and the council thought $50,000 was the right amount.
Construction is expected to start this fall.
