The City Council and Mayor recognized this years winner of the annual Amos Owen Award for Human Rights Monday night.
The Human Rights Commission received 10 nominations with Heidi Jones being chosen.
Jones was humble in accepting the award, thanking the community.
Jones was a longtime School Board member who was acknowledged for her work in children’s advocacy and says she sees a bright future for the youth of Red Wing.
Jones was nominated by Lois Burns, a past recipient herself.
Since 2001, the annual Amos Owen Award has recognized local individuals for their work in promoting justice and equality for others based around human rights.
The award is named after Amos Owen, the late spiritual leader from Prairie Island Indian Community who preserved Dakota language and culture, and shared the belief that everyone can work together in peace.
